The Design Without the Design
When I started to build some of my very first websites, I was trying to make my designs looks powerful, with plenty of awesome parts like images, dark colors and similar things. Those designs could be compared to the designs of usual gaming websites or blogs which we can find today.
However, as time passed I realized that design is not just to make your site look awesome and powerful and nice to see. I found that no matter how good the design of my website was, visitors didn’t love it because it wasn’t much user-friendly. Actually, it was very hard to see the most of the website because the design was so flaring and too notable. This is when I started to think about designing very simple web sites and after some time I realized that the website is more functional and more user-friendly if it is simple-designed.
Then I started to study the design of Google and found that minimalistic design is not only user-friendly but also very payfull because advertisements can be much better integrated and they will be much better noticed by visitors when you have a simple design rather than the noisy one.
“Design without the design” should be the parole of every serious web designer.
That is why I am little irritated when some of my customers tell me that they want a lot of animations, big images, big logo and big everything on their website. It seems that some people are making their websites only for themselves. You can make such website, you can make the noisy design which will say “Hey I am at the top of the World!” but you are going to be probably the only one who will be browsing it. And that is what I call “narcissistic design”.
But while I am writing this, I am watching the design of my very own blog and I am laughing a little bit to myself. Why? Because what I see now there is the much of things on my blog for which I wrote that shouldn’t be there. So, I just got the new yellow paper stuck up amongst the plenty of other similar ones at the top of my laptop screen, which are containing hard tasks to be read and done, and this one is screaming with the uppercase font: GT1987 BLOG REDESIGN! I am afraid that it will have to wait there for couple of months… at least…
